- A judge in New Mexico ordered Meta to pay a $25bn fine, which was equivalent to about £18.6bn.
- The trial lasted for two weeks, and a jury found Meta violated the law nearly 44 million times regarding data privacy.
- State judge Francis Mathew issued the order on a Wednesday, initially ordering $219.4 billion before reducing it.
- Meta's violations spanned from 2010 to 2021, and New Mexico first sued over Unfair Practices Act violations in 2021.
- The lawsuit originated from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where user information was used for the 2016 US election when Donald Trump was first elected.
- New Mexico also fined Meta almost $1bn regarding child safety on its platforms, and Meta reached an $18bn deal with California and an $18 billion settlement with 52 state attorneys general.
- Meta's stock rose about 2% after the decision, and Raul Torrez stated it was a historic day.
